Efficiently Funding Scholarships

Key Priority

A key priority for GSMS is to ensure a diverse student population. To achieve this, we spend a significant portion of our budget to provide financial aid to children who would greatly benefit from our community but cannot afford to attend.

State of Indiana

The State of Indiana provides an outstanding way to fund K–12 academic scholarships. Donations to a Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) get a 50% state tax credit and are federally deductible!

An example of how it works:

  • Donation to SGO:
  • State Tax Credit:
  • Value of Federal Deduction
  • Net Cost to Taxpayer

$50,000
– $25,000
– $9,250
= $15,750

Notes

The above example assumes a 37% federal tax bracket, itemization of deductions, SALT maximum otherwise reached, and state tax liability of $25,000+ (carryforwards available); amounts depend on your specific circumstances.

Even if you don't itemize you can still receive a tax credit on your state return.
